Backstage

Backstage

Herman Pierrot’s personal tool for running YouTube channels by the numbers: reading channel data, putting ad figures next to it and planning the work.

What Backstage is

Backstage is the working environment of Herman Pierrot, a YouTube strategist in the Netherlands (herman.yt). He uses it himself, for his own analysis of channel and advertising data. At the moment that is mainly the data of HBM Machines. Backstage has a private login: accounts are by personal invitation only.

What it does

  • Reading channel figures. Views, watch time, subscribers and traffic sources of YouTube channels, to see what works and what the next step is.
  • Putting advertising next to it. Campaign figures and costs from Google Ads, so paid and organic reach can be compared.
  • Planning. Placing work blocks from the planning as events in his own Google Calendar, and showing the day’s appointments.
  • The work around it. Keeping productions, knowledge and administration in one place.

Why Backstage asks for access to Google

Backstage works with Google’s official APIs and only asks for the access a feature needs:

  • YouTube (youtube.readonly, yt-analytics.readonly): reading channel and video statistics for the analysis. Read-only: Backstage does not publish, change or delete anything on YouTube.
  • Google Ads (adwords): reading campaign figures and costs. Backstage does not create, change or stop campaigns.
  • Google Calendar (calendar.events, calendar.calendarlist.readonly): choosing the calendar, reading events for the daily overview, and placing, updating or removing its own work blocks.
  • Google account (openid, userinfo.email): showing the email address of the connected account, so it is clear which account is connected.

How Backstage handles that data is described in the privacy policy. The rules for using it are in the terms of service.
